The United Nations launched the annual competition for the best actions to promote and protect human rights in Moldova
CHISINAU, 24 April 2013—The United Nations
launched today the 9th edition of the competition for the best actions
to promote and protect human rights in the Republic of Moldova.
Organized since 2004, the competition aims to highlight and award
creative, innovative, effective, timely and engaged human rights
initiatives and actions.
“Previous editions saw a lot of courageous individuals and organizations whose actions had a positive impact on human rights of people in Moldova”, said Nicola Harrington-Buhay, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova. ”The United Nations will continue its human rights work ensuring that all people enjoy their civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. These rights are both universal - they belong to everyone, everywhere and at all times - and indivisible - that is, they are intimately interlinked".
The competition is based on nominations with the public being encouraged to nominate civil society organizations, journalists, media organizations, public authorities, etc., who have made a genuine contribution to the human rights promotion and protection in Moldova during September 2012 - August 2013.
Similar to previous years, the nominations can be submitted in Romanian, English, Russian or in any minority language of the Republic of Moldova online or to the United Nations House in Chisinau. The regulation of the competition is available here.
Materials derived from the public consultation process, as well as on the basis of other materials available, including through independent research, will be reviewed by a team of experts and an independent board consisting of representatives of international organizations and independent experts.
The winners will be announced and awarded during the UN Human Rights Gala of Awards, organized annually on December 10, Human Rights Day.
Human rights are at the core of the United Nations’ work in Moldova and an integral part of its development programmes and policy formulation. Areas of human rights engagement by UN Moldova in the recent years include combating torture and ill-treatment; elimination of violence against women, children and older persons; promotion of the rights of migrants, refugees and stateless people; combating discrimination and working toward the inclusion of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS, excluded minority groups such as Roma and other marginalized persons or groups.
